The sign of the cross once represented horrific Roman execution. Today the sign of the cross represents universal HOPE.

This is because Jesus Christ died a death we deserve for our sins, taking our sins upon Him, taking the wrath of the Father upon Himself. In exchange He offers to us eternal life by His death & resurrection, once and for all.
